معرفی
Dr. James Howells is a Research Fellow at the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney. His research focuses on neurophysiological mechanisms underlying motor neuron diseases, particularly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy. He specializes in electrophysiological techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and peripheral nerve excitability studies to investigate cortical and axonal dysfunction.
Key research interests include motor neuron disease pathophysiology, ion channel dysfunction in neurological disorders, and the development of diagnostic tools for early ALS detection. His work has been supported by grants from the Brain Foundation and Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia.
- Research Fellow, Sydney Medical School (since 2017)
- Bill Gole MND Research Fellow (2017–present)
- Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia Postdoctoral Fellowship (2014)
Publications highlight contributions to understanding cortical excitability changes in ALS, axonal physiology in neuromuscular diseases, and methodological advancements in neurophysiological testing. His team collaborates internationally on projects involving transcranial magnetic stimulation and neurofilament biomarkers for disease progression monitoring.
Awards include the Brain Foundation/Dawn Wallace Fellowship (2017) and recognition for contributions to MND research. Current projects focus on optimizing diagnostic tools and exploring therapeutic targets for neuromuscular disorders.
