Clinical Associate Professor James Burrell is affiliated with the Concord Clinical School at the University of Sydney and serves as Head of Neurology at Concord Hospital. He specializes in neurology with a focus on dementia syndromes, particularly frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and its overlap with motor neuron disease (MND). Burrell completed his Arts/Medicine degree at UNSW (2000) and clinical training at Sydney hospitals, achieving Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (2008). He leads an Early-Onset Dementia clinic and holds NHMRC Early Career Fellowships (2014–2018) alongside multiple research grants.
His research combines clinical assessment, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, and neuroimaging to advance understanding of atypical dementias. Key contributions include studies on FTD-MND overlaps, linguistic changes in semantic dementia, and the role of orexin in behavioral variant FTD. Burrell collaborates with neuropathology and genetics researchers, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
Awards include the James W. Lance Young Investigator Award (2009) and teaching recognition via the Concord Clinical School Prize (2008). He actively supervises Honours/PhD students and sits on professional bodies like the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN).
Notable recent work addresses neurology workforce shortages in Australia and explores decision-making deficits in dementia patients. His affiliations include the Brain and Mind Centre, aligning with translational research goals.
