Steve Timoney

Dr. Steve Timoney is a Lecturer in Viking and Early Medieval Studies at Perth College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). He leads the MSc Interpretation: Management and Practice program, focusing on heritage interpretation and community engagement. With a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Glasgow (2008), his research explores cultural heritage interpretation, visitor experiences at heritage sites, public archaeology, and social geography. He has contributed to projects including the Museum of Rapid Transition assessment and Viking/Norse heritage tourism studies in Scotland. His recent work examines ultra-running as serious leisure. He holds academic qualifications in Human Geography (University of Aberdeen, 2000) and Archaeology (University of Glasgow, MPhil 2002, PhD 2008).

Research interests include experiential landscapes, sustainability, and the intersection of heritage with identity. Notable projects include visitor research at the Ulster Museum and cultural heritage assessments for ecomuseums. His publications span heritage policy, tourism impacts, and participatory archaeology. Timoney’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and sustainable communities.

Advisory roles include leading the MSc program and collaborating on research grants. He has supervised student projects on heritage tourism and cultural identity. Active in both academic and community-based initiatives, he bridges archaeological research with public engagement.
