Professor Steve Russell is the Head of the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge. Holding a PhD in Genetics from the University of Glasgow, he established core functional genomics infrastructure for the UK Drosophila community (FlyChip, DrosDel) and contributes to global initiatives like Target Malaria. His academic ranks include University Lecturer (2003), Reader in Genome Biology (2008), and Professor of Genome Biology (2013).
- Research focus: Transcriptional regulation and chromatin architecture in Drosophila, with long-standing work on Sox domain transcription factors (CNS/gonad development) and Hox/Notch signaling pathways
- Key collaborations: Alistair McGregor (Oxford Brookes), Sarah Bray/Rob White (PDN), Kathryn Lilley (Cambridge Centre for Proteomics), Austin Burt (Target Malaria)
Community contributions: Developed genomic resources including FlyChip, DrosDel, protein trap lines, and BBSRC sLoLa embryonic proteome project. Currently advising on gene drive technologies for malaria vector control.
