Steve Mutsaers

Steve Mutsaers is an Associate Professor and Head of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Western Australia (UWA), School of Biomedical Sciences. He also holds an Honorary Research Fellowship at UWA's Institute for Respiratory Health and is WA President of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (2023–2025). His research focuses on mechanisms of tissue repair and fibrosis, particularly in the lung and mesothelium, as well as malignant mesothelioma biology.

Education: PhD in Pathology from UWA (1993), postdoctoral training at University College London (UCL), and prior roles including Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at UCL. Key affiliations include UWA’s Institute for Respiratory Health, PathWest Laboratory Medicine WA, and the UWA Centre for Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine.

Research interests span pulmonary fibrosis, mesothelial cell biology, and immune mechanisms driving fibrosis. He has published >100 manuscripts and secured grants from NHMRC, MRFF, and international bodies. Notable awards include the Cancer Council WA Career Achievement Award (2016) and IMIG Service Award (2014).

His recent work emphasizes transcriptomic signatures in mesothelioma prognosis, immune cell roles in fibrosis, and clinical guidelines for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He has supervised 13 PhD students and collaborates internationally (Netherlands, UK, USA).
