Dr. Steve Marshall is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Core Faculty at the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center (IPRC), where he served as Director from 2011 to 2024. He holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. His research focuses on injury and violence prevention, with recent emphasis on the opioid crisis and its societal impacts. He also has longstanding interests in sports medicine, biostatistics, and epidemiologic methods.
Education: PhD in Epidemiology from UNC Chapel Hill (1998), Dip Ag S in Biometrics and Field Experimentation from Lincoln University (1989), BSc in Mathematics from University of Canterbury (1987).
Research interests include injury prevention strategies, opioid overdose mechanisms, and sports-related injury mitigation. He collaborates with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services' Injury and Violence Prevention Branch, and has contributed to public health initiatives like the Medicaid 'lock-in' program evaluations. He teaches courses such as EPID 690 (Intervention Epidemiology), EPID 718 (Analytic Methods in Observational Epidemiology), and EPID 625 (Injury and Violence as a Public Health Problem).
Professional activities include membership in the Safe States Alliance Executive Board and the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research. His work emphasizes academic-practitioner collaboration to bridge research and public health practice.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Injury Program within the Gillings School's Department of Epidemiology and contributes to the UNC IPRC's mission to reduce injury-related harm through interdisciplinary research.
