Dr. Steve Mairs is a Senior Scientist at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) operated by the East Asian Observatory in Hilo, Hawaii. He holds a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Victoria (2017) and specializes in studying the birth of stars and protostellar systems using submillimeter astronomy. His work focuses on observational strategies, data processing, and leading the JCMT Transient Survey to track variability in deeply embedded young stars. He has contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed publications since 2012, including groundbreaking studies on stellar flares (e.g., JW 566), Betelgeuse’s dimming event, and SCUBA-2 observations of Southern Orion A. Mairs also supports international astronomers and optimizes the telescope’s scientific productivity through instrument development.
Research interests include protostellar accretion, submillimeter continuum variability, and the interplay between magnetic fields and star formation. His efforts bridge observational data with simulations to understand early solar system formation processes.
