Steve Fuller is the Auguste Comte Professor of Social Epistemology at the University of Warwick, UK, where he is based in the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Social Sciences. He is widely recognized as the founder of the field of social epistemology, which bridges philosophy and sociology in the study of knowledge production. He has delivered distinguished lectures internationally, including the 2019/2020 Stanisław Kamiński Memorial Lectures at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, on the theme "The History of Philosophy as Told from the Future."
His research interests span social epistemology, transhumanism, posthumanism, philosophy of science, and the history of ideas. He approaches these topics with a futurist orientation, reinterpreting classical philosophical traditions in light of emerging technological and societal transformations. His work critically examines the normative status of the 'human' in an age of artificial intelligence and genetic engineering.
His most recent publications and lectures explore the future of philosophy and humanity, drawing on thinkers like Hegel, Feuerbach, and Croce. These works reflect a consistent thematic focus on the evolution of knowledge, the legitimacy of scientific authority, and the philosophical implications of transhumanist agendas. His trilogy on Humanity 2.0 and his book Post-Truth: Knowledge as a Power Game exemplify his critical engagement with contemporary epistemic crises.
Steve Fuller has received numerous academic honors:
- D.Litt. from the University of Warwick (2007)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts
- Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences
- Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts
He has advised numerous students and shaped the field through his editorial leadership and founding of the Social Epistemology journal. Although specific grant details are not provided, his sustained scholarly output and international invitations reflect major research impact. He has also been active in public debates on science, religion, and education, including the intelligent design controversy.
Fuller leads no formal lab but has cultivated a global intellectual network through his writings, lectures, and founding of academic discourse in social epistemology. His work continues to influence philosophy, sociology, and science and technology studies (STS) communities worldwide.
