Susan B. Levin is the Roe/Straut Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at Smith College, where she chairs the Department of Philosophy. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and a B.A. from Pomona College. Levin's research bridges ancient Greek philosophy and contemporary bioethics, with particular focus on critiques of transhumanism and disability advocacy.
Her scholarship critically examines transhumanist proposals for human enhancement, arguing they misunderstand human biology and undervalue human capacities. Levin's monograph 'Posthuman Bliss? The Failed Promise of Transhumanism' offers a comprehensive critique of transhumanist visions for human enhancement. Her current work explores the ethical implications of life-extension technologies and their intersection with disability rights frameworks.
Levin teaches courses in bioethics, ancient/medieval philosophy, and philosophy of technology. She maintains active research collaborations examining the philosophical foundations of biomedical authority and its relationship to social determinants of health.
