Steve Coyne is an Assistant Professor in Philosophy and Computer Science (teaching stream) at the University of Toronto, with a focus on moral and political philosophy, philosophy of law, and ethics in technology. He co-leads the Department of Computer Science’s Embedded Ethics Education Initiative, emphasizing ethics integration in STEM education. His research explores how speech acts affect others’ reasons, authority dynamics in law and politics, and AI alignment challenges.
Research interests include normative ethics, democratic theory, and applied ethics in technology. Recent work bridges philosophy and computer science, addressing ethical education’s societal impact. He has published in top journals like Law and Philosophy and Philosophy and Public Affairs, with a focus on political obligation, civil disobedience, and ethics curriculum design.
