David Owens is a Professor of Philosophy at King's College London, based in the Department of Philosophy within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He previously taught at the University of Sheffield and Reading University, and held visiting positions at All Souls College, Oxford, Yale University, and others. His research focuses on normative ethics, practical and epistemic normativity, early modern political philosophy, and foundations of private law. He has authored four books including Bound by Convention (2022) and Shaping the Normative Landscape (2012). His work explores obligations, social rules, and their roles in forgiveness, consent, and legal theory.
He teaches undergraduate and MA courses in normative ethics and actively engages in public lectures and media reviews for the Times Literary Supplement. His recent publications analyze topics like social rules, authority, and moral responsibility. Owens has received grants for projects such as 'Liberty, Authority and Responsibility' (2024–2025) and 'Obligation and Convention' (2020–2021), funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
