Dr. Owen Abbott is a Lecturer in Social Sciences at Cardiff University, appointed via a Leverhulme fellowship since 2022. He previously held positions at the University of York and the University of Manchester. He earned his PhD in Sociology from the University of Exeter in 2017. His research focuses on the sociology of morality, particularly everyday practices, relational sociology, and the sociologies of the self. Key works include The Self, Relational Sociology, and Morality in Practice (2019), which won the BSA Philip Abrams Memorial Prize 2020, and Masking in the Pandemic: Materiality, Interaction, and Moral Practice (2023), co-authored with Morgan Centre colleagues. His 2025 monograph Social Theorists of Morality: Essays in Moral Agency critically examines foundational social theorists' contributions to moral sociology.
Research interests include forgiveness in personal relationships, moral agency, and the interplay between material culture and ethics. He collaborates with The Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Lives, exploring topics like pandemic mask-wearing as a moral practice. His work bridges classical and contemporary theories, emphasizing relational dynamics and practical ethics.
