Dr. Emma Casey is a Reader in Sociology at the University of York's Department of Sociology, where she serves as Deputy Head of Department (staffing and workload) and previously as Director of Teaching and Learning. A sociologist specializing in feminist approaches to domestic labor and consumer culture, she examines how structural inequalities of class, race, and gender manifest in everyday practices.
Her research focuses on:
- Gendered representations of housework in social media ('cleanfluencing')
- Sociology of gambling and domestic economies
- Historical transformations in consumption practices (shopping malls, home-baking)
- Critical analysis of neoliberal co-option of domestic labor
Her publications reveal a clear trajectory from early gambling studies toward contemporary analyses of digital domesticity. The 2025 monograph The Return of the Housewife critically examines how social media reframes unpaid labor as 'self-care,' while collaborative work with Jo Littler investigates 'cleanfluencing' cultures. Her scholarship consistently connects historical patterns with digital-age consumer capitalism.
Award highlights:
- Shortlisted for BSA Philip Abrams Memorial Prize (2009)
- Highly Commended in The Sociological Review Journal Article of the Year (2023)
Casey holds significant editorial responsibilities as co-editor of Critical Gambling Studies and member of Cultural Sociology's editorial board. Her ESRC-funded research established a gambling directive at Mass Observation Archive. She actively engages public audiences through media appearances (Stylist, Evening Standard) and podcasts (Bunker, New Books Network).
