Steve Blakeslee is a Professor of Writing and Literature at The Evergreen State College, where he has taught for 27 years. He holds a B.S. in Environmental Studies (1986) and an M.A. in English (1991) from the University of Washington. His academic interests focus on 19th- and 20th-century literary classics, autobiographical narratives, graphic novels, and creative writing. He is currently working on a book project, Dad’s Diary: An Autobiographical Collage, following a residency at the Whiteley Center (University of Washington, Friday Harbor Labs). Blakeslee advises Evergreen’s literary magazine Slightly West, which he co-founded in 1986. He served as Faculty Chair from 2017 to 2019 and contributed to curricular planning for the Professional and Continuing Education division.

Research & Creative Work: Blakeslee’s creative output includes poetry, fables, personal essays, memoir, and translation. His recent article Teachers as Students explores pedagogical approaches that position instructors as co-learners with students. He emphasizes interdisciplinary studies, blending literature with psychology and visual narrative forms.
Teaching Philosophy: Blakeslee prioritizes skill development in reading, writing, and critical thinking, while fostering collaborative learning environments. Courses he has taught include Epic Journeys from Homer to Milton, Graphic Novel Studies, and Self and Story: Psychology and Literature.
