Steve Anderson is a Joint Professor at UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television and Department of Design Media Arts. He holds a Ph.D. in Film, Literature and Culture from USC and an M.F.A. in Film and Video from CalArts. His research focuses on the intersection of media, history, technology, and culture, with notable works including Technologies of Vision (MIT, 2017) and Technologies of History (Dartmouth, 2011). He co-edits the electronic journal Vectors and founded Critical Commons, a public media archive and fair use advocacy network.
His scholarly contributions span digital humanities, documentary film theory, and interactive media. He has directed projects like Technologies of Cinema (2015) and led the Transient Media Lab, exploring immersive and documentary media. Anderson has been awarded grants from the Mellon Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and NEH, among others.
Before UCLA, he taught at USC School of Cinematic Arts, founding their Media Arts + Practice Ph.D. program. His work integrates practice-based research, film editing experience, and advocacy for open-access scholarship.
