Stephen Waxman is the Bridget Flaherty Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience, and Pharmacology at Yale School of Medicine. He serves as Director of the Center for Neuroscience and Regeneration Research and previously chaired the Department of Neurology from 1986 to 2009. He has held faculty positions at Harvard, MIT, and Stanford prior to joining Yale.

Dr. Waxman’s research focuses on the molecular basis of nervous system disorders, particularly ion channel function in multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and neuropathic pain. His pioneering work has elucidated how sodium channel plasticity contributes to recovery in demyelinated axons and has identified specific ion channel mutations underlying hereditary pain syndromes. He integrates molecular biology, genetics, electrophysiology, and computational modeling to develop novel therapies.
His recent publications highlight advancements in automated electrophysiology, pharmacogenomics, and the discovery of new analgesic targets such as Nav1.8 and TRPM8. His work on non-addictive pain medications is currently being tested in Phase II clinical trials, and he has identified ion channels involved in osteoarthritis and pain resilience.

His laboratory is actively involved in the PROPANE Neuropathy Genomics Project, CRS Injury and Repair, and the International Pain Genomics Consortium.
He leads the Waxman Lab at the Center for Neuroscience and Regeneration Research, which employs state-of-the-art techniques in molecular imaging, stem cell models, and high-throughput electrophysiology to study nerve excitability and develop targeted therapies for neurological disorders.
