Stephen Townley Holgate

Stephen Townley Holgate is the Medical Research Council Clinical Professor of Immunopharmacology at the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Medicine, holding concurrent roles as Honorary Consultant Physician at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. He chairs the Main Panel A (Biomedical & Life Sciences) for the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) and leads national and international organizations including the UK National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs). His research focuses on asthma mechanisms, including mast cell biology, airway inflammation, environmental triggers, and translational medicine. He has pioneered studies linking asthma genetics (e.g., ADAM33) to disease susceptibility and co-founded Synairgen, a biotech firm advancing antiviral therapies for respiratory diseases.
