Stephen M. Strittmatter is the Vincent Coates Professor of Neurology and Professor of Neuroscience at Yale University School of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member since 1993. He chairs the Department of Neuroscience and directs the Kavli Institute for Neuroscience, Yale Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and Ludwig Program for Neuroimmunity in Dementia.
- Harvard College (AB, 1980), Johns Hopkins University (MD/PhD, 1986)
- Massachusetts General Hospital (Internship/Residency/Research Fellow, 1987–1991)
- Harvard Medical School (Assistant Professor, 1991–1993)
His research focuses on neurodegeneration and neural repair, particularly molecular mechanisms limiting axonal growth in spinal cord injury and Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. His lab investigates Aβ oligomers, progranulin, and TMEM106B interactions with neuronal receptors, employing CRISPR screens, single-cell transcriptomics, and translational models.
Recent publications address X-chromosome genetic risk in Alzheimer's, mGluR5 modulation for synaptic loss reversal, and Nogo receptor inhibition in spinal cord injury. Awards include the King Faisal Prize for Medicine (2021) and NINDS Jacob Javits Award (2005). He leads clinical trials for neurodegenerative therapies and directs the Strittmatter Laboratory at Yale's 100 College Street facility.
