Stephen S. Bush is a Professor of Religious Studies and Chair of Religious Studies at Brown University. His research focuses on the theory of religion, philosophy of religion, and religious ethics, with particular emphasis on William James, mysticism, political theory, and pragmatism. He holds a PhD from Princeton University (2008), alongside MA (2006) and BA (1998) degrees. His work integrates approaches to religion as experience, symbolic meaning, and power dynamics.
Notable publications include *Visions of Religion: Experience, Meaning, and Power* (Oxford, 2014) and *William James on Democratic Individuality* (Cambridge, 2017). His research explores intersections of religion and politics, ethics of violence, and the legacy of William James. Awards include fellowships from the Wriston Foundation, Cogut Center, and Pembroke Center.
Bush teaches courses on religious ethics, mysticism, and the philosophy of religion. His current projects examine James’s political thought and the ethics of religious experience.
