Stephen Richard Amico is an Associate Professor at the Grieg Academy – Department of Music, University of Bergen (UiB), where he contributes to interdisciplinary research in musicology, gender and sexuality studies, and post-Soviet cultural studies. He is affiliated with the Foundational Questions in Gender and Sexuality Research and the Research Group for East Slavic Languages, Societies and Cultures.
His research interests span a broad range of topics, including gender, sexuality, phenomenology, media and technology studies, embodiment, decoloniality, race, Russian and post-Soviet music, sound studies, popular and dance music, and fashion. He advocates for postdisciplinary approaches that critically engage with materiality, technology, and social justice.
The recent publications of Stephen Richard Amico (2020–2024) reflect a sustained focus on queer theory, ethnomusicology, embodiment, and the politics of silence and performance. His work bridges musicology with critical theory, exploring themes such as polyphonic embodiment, queer resistance, and the unsustainable state of the humanities. The articles demonstrate a strong trend toward interdisciplinary critique, particularly at the intersection of music, identity, and power in Russian, Soviet, and post-Soviet contexts.
Stephen Amico has delivered lectures at international institutions including Memorial University of Newfoundland, University of Tromsø, University of Vienna, and IASPM conferences. He has taught courses at City University of New York, University of Pennsylvania, University of Amsterdam, and University of Vienna, covering topics such as music and gender, popular music studies, and Russian music culture.
His publications include a 2023 monograph Ethnomusicology, Queerness, Masculinity: Silence=Death (Palgrave Macmillan), a 2014 monograph Roll Over, Tchaikovsky!, and numerous peer-reviewed articles and encyclopedia entries, including "Disco" (2003) in Men & Masculinities. His work appears in journals such as The Journal of Musicology and is largely open access.
