Thomas Richard Hilder is a Professor of Ethnomusicology at NTNU’s Department of Music. He holds a PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London (2011), and has held postdoctoral positions at the Center for World Music (University of Hildesheim) and the Grieg Academy (University of Bergen). Currently, he is researching LGBTQ+ choirs in Europe and has been awarded the Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers (2024-25). His work bridges musicology with queer theory, postcolonial studies, and Indigenous politics, focusing on topics like Sámi music, digital media, and community activism.
Key educational milestones include his PhD in 2011 and postdoctoral roles in Germany and Norway. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to music’s role in justice, identity, and transnational activism. Notable publications include the monograph *Sámi Musical Performance and the Politics of Indigeneity in Northern Europe* (2015) and co-edited volumes like *Music, Indigeneity, Digital Media* (2017).
His teaching and advocacy focus on ‘transgressive pedagogy,’ fostering inclusive classrooms through feminist and queer frameworks. He leads NTNU’s LGBTQ+ Staff Network and co-founded the LGBTQ+ Music Study Group. Awards include the 2023 NTNU Prize for Equality and Diversity.
Academic contributions extend to editorial roles (JRMA) and organizing events like the Grieg Research School (2018). Recent outreach includes keynote lectures on queer choirs and radical care, as well as collaborations with LGBTQ+ choirs like Trondheim’s *Kor Hen*.
