Professor Stephen Rice is a distinguished academic in river science and environmental sustainability, currently holding the title of Professor of River Science and Environmental Sustainability (BioGeomorphology) at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). Previously, he served at Loughborough University in roles including Professor, Head of Department of Geography and Environment, and Associate Dean for Research & Innovation. His research focuses on fluvial geomorphology, biogeomorphology, and ecohydraulics, with a particular emphasis on gravel-bed rivers and the interactions between biotic and abiotic processes.
Education:
- BA Geography, Oxford University, Herford College (EW Gilbert Prize)
- MSc and PhD from University of British Columbia (Canada), specializing in bed material texture and fluvial sediment dynamics.
Research interests include the role of organisms like crayfish, fish, and insects in shaping river morphology, sediment transport dynamics, and the ecological implications of fluvial processes. He leads the new BioGeomorphology (BiG) Lab at MMU, equipped with experimental flumes and particle image velocimetry (PIV) for studying biogeomorphic interactions.
Professional roles:
- President (and Fellow) of the British Society for Geomorphology
- Editorial Board member of Sedimentology, RGS-IBG Book Series, and others
- External examiner at Durham, Lancaster, and Manchester Universities
Key contributions include studies on invasive species impacts, sediment-ecology linkages, and the development of novel methodologies for quantifying riverbed roughness and biotic effects on sediment transport. His work bridges physical and ecological disciplines, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to river management and restoration.
