Stephen Rachman is an Associate Professor at Michigan State University, serving as Director of the American Studies Program and Co-Director of the Digital Humanities and Literary Cognition Laboratory. He holds affiliations with English, Film Studies, and Jewish Studies. His research focuses on Literary Studies, Digital Humanities, Race and Ethnic Studies, American Literature, Medical Humanities, and Transnational Studies.
Notable achievements include the 2007 AT&T Faculty Instructional Technology Award and award-winning publications such as Cholera, Chloroform, and the Science of Medicine and a web project on Sunday school books. He has collaborated on neuro-literary studies and projects like the Melville Electronic Library.
Rachman’s work spans Poe studies, 19th-century American literature, and transnational figures like Pearl S. Buck. He has held fellowships, including the William S. Vaughn Visiting Fellowship at Vanderbilt University, and contributed to interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Lam Qua paintings study.
Recent projects include co-authoring an essay for Humanities and the Digital (MIT Press) and leading a study on Pearl S. Buck’s transnational legacy. His courses cover American literature, Jewish American literature, and literature and medicine.
