Stephen R. Ortiz is an Associate Professor of History at Binghamton University (SUNY), where he focuses on the political, military, diplomatic, and gender history of the twentieth-century United States. He directs the University Scholars program and serves as Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Enrichment. His research examines veterans' roles in shaping national policies, particularly during the New Deal era.

Ortiz is the author of Beyond the Bonus March and GI Bill: How Veteran Politics Shaped the New Deal Era and Veterans' Policies, Veterans' Politics: New Perspectives on Veterans in the Modern United States. His current project, Comrades in Arms: Veterans Organizations and the Politics of National Security in the American Century, explores the influence of veterans' groups on U.S. national security policy from World War I to the Vietnam War.
His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates on citizenship, federal governance, and veterans' reintegration into society.
