Dr. Stephen Parkinson is an Honorary Faculty Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Medieval and Modern Languages department. He retired in 2015 but continues research on medieval Portuguese literature and linguistics, focusing on the Cantigas de Santa Maria. He was formerly an Associate Professor and Emeritus Fellow of Linacre College.
Education: M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.
Research Interests: His work centers on textual criticism, medieval metrics, and the Cantigas de Santa Maria. He has led projects including a Leverhulme Trust-funded edition of the 13th-century Marian song collection and co-founded the Centre for the Study of the Cantigas de Santa Maria. He also contributed to studies on Portuguese loanwords in Bengali and medieval manuscript codicology.
Publications: Over 50 scholarly articles and books, including An Anthology of the Cantigas de Santa Maria (2015) and works on Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to medieval texts, combining linguistic analysis with manuscript studies.
Awards: Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellowship (2015–2017). He was General Editor of The Year's Work in Modern Language Studies (1988–2015) and co-edited the Companion to Portuguese Literature.
Grants: Supported by the British Academy, Leverhulme Trust, and Modern Humanities Research Association. His projects include digital initiatives like the Oxford Cantigas database.
Labs/Teams: Co-director of the Centre for the Study of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, collaborating with Prof. Manuel Pedro Ferreira on musical editions.
