Dr. Stephen Mears is a Senior Lecturer in Sports & Exercise Nutrition at Loughborough University. His research focuses on hydration strategies, exercise performance in extreme environments, renal health in athletes, and environmental challenges in sports. He is affiliated with the Sports for Climate Action and Nature research group. Mears holds a PhD from Loughborough University (2012), examining fluid intake behaviors, and a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Bath (2008). He has industry experience as a Sports Scientist at the London 2012 Olympics and has contributed to medical care research at global endurance events.
His research interests include the physiological effects of dehydration, electrolyte balance, and the development of innovative rehydration solutions. Key areas explored in his work involve how heat stress impacts endurance performance, the role of natural carbohydrate sources in sports nutrition, and the mitigation of environmental challenges for athletes and spectators at major events like the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Recent studies highlight his work on biomarkers of renal injury under hypohydration, the efficacy of novel amino acid formulations in rehydration beverages, and the perceptual effects of dehydration on cycling performance. Mears maintains a strong connection to athletic communities, actively competing in middle-distance running and other sports, which informs his applied research in real-world performance contexts.
