Stephen Marrin is a Professor in the School of Integrated Sciences at James Madison University, where he also serves as Director of the 250+ student Intelligence Analysis Program. He holds a Ph.D. in Foreign Affairs (University of Virginia, 2009), M.A. in Foreign Affairs (UVA, 2002), and B.A. in Political Science (Colgate University, 1995). His research focuses on intelligence analysis improvement, analytic evaluation criteria, and the interplay between analysts and decision-makers.
Professional experience includes roles as CIA analyst (1996–1998), TRW analyst (1999–2000), GAO analyst (2003–2004), and academic positions at Mercyhurst University (2006–2010) and Brunel University (2010–2013). He currently chairs the Intelligence Studies Section at the International Studies Association (ISA) and edits Intelligence and National Security.
Research interests emphasize cross-disciplinary learning (e.g., from journalism, social sciences), intelligence-policy dynamics, and bridging scholarship-practice gaps. Notable awards include recognition as a top 10 intelligence reform expert (National Journal, 2004).
Key contributions include authoring books like Improving Intelligence Analysis and Intelligence Theory, and co-editing special issues on intelligence education and women in intelligence. His work addresses analytic methodology, professional standards, and the evolving role of intelligence in global security.
