Stephen L. Teitel is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Rochester. He joined the university as an Assistant Professor in 1986, was promoted to Professor in 1999, and served as Associate Chair from 2013-2018. His research focuses on theoretical condensed matter physics, particularly statistical mechanics, critical phenomena, and jamming transitions in granular systems.
- BS and PhD in Physics from Cornell University (1975, 1981)
- Postdoctoral appointments at Ohio State University (1981-83) and Weizmann Institute (1983-86)
Recent work examines jamming behavior in athermal frictionless systems, with studies on compression-driven transitions, shear-induced flow, and particle shape effects. His research also extends to superconductivity and nanostructure stability.
Notable awards include:
- Fellow of the American Physical Society (2000)
- Excellence in Teaching Award (2000, 2016)
- University Bridging Fellowship (2003)
- APS Outstanding Referee (2011)
