Jolie A. Cizewski is a Distinguished Professor and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Rutgers University. She holds a B.A. in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania (1973), M.A. and Ph.D. from SUNY Stony Brook (1975, 1978), with postdoctoral work at Los Alamos National Laboratory (1978-80). Her career includes roles as Assistant/Associate Professor at Yale (1980-86), Associate/Full Professor at Rutgers (1986-2002), and Distinguished Professor since 2002. She served as Vice Dean and Acting Dean of the Graduate School-New Brunswick (2002-2008).
Her research focuses on the structure of neutron-rich heavy nuclei, probing shell evolution far from stability and their role in r-process nucleosynthesis. Key areas include: neutron single-particle excitations in N=50/82 nuclei, superdeformed states, and reaction mechanisms for astrophysical studies. She has pioneered work with radioactive beams and advanced detector systems like GODDESS.
- Notable awards: APS Outstanding Referee, Daniel Gorenstein Memorial Award (2016), AAAS Fellow
- Leadership roles: AAAS Member-at-Large, Rutgers-wide Academic Planning Committee
Her research group collaborates internationally on projects at facilities like the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility and National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. She has supervised numerous graduate students and postdocs, contributing to over 50 peer-reviewed publications since 2005.
