- PhD, Microbial Physiology, University of Rochester (1981)
Research Interests focus on oxidative stress responses, decompression sickness pathophysiology, and hyperbaric oxygen's role in mobilizing vasculogenic stem cells. His work bridges fundamental biochemistry (e.g., inert gas effects) and clinical applications (e.g., carbon monoxide poisoning, diabetic wound healing).
Scientific Awards include the Paul Bert Award (2007) and dual Albert R. Behnke Awards (1996, 2008) from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, along with the Hyperbaric Research Prize (2008). He has served on NIH study sections, EPA advisory committees, and journal editorial boards.
Grants include NIH R01 DK94260 on stem cell mobilization in diabetes and multiple Office of Naval Research projects (e.g., N00014-13-1-0614 on human decompression stress). Collaborative grants (e.g., University of Pennsylvania/NIH GM103591) explore gut oxygen equilibrium and microbiome interactions.
