Stephen Knudsen is a Professor of Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) since 1993. He holds an M.F.A. in Painting from SCAD and a B.S. in Biology from Pacific Lutheran University. His academic roles also include serving as a Crew Coach (1989–2007) and teaching foundation studies at SCAD. Knudsen’s research focuses on contemporary art theory, metamodernism, and the philosophy of art criticism. He has organized exhibitions such as Regarding the Sublime (2013) and co-directed Game of Waste (2016), which was showcased at the Los Angeles Hollywood Reel Festival. His awards include NEA funding (2013), a SCAD Sabbatical Award (2015), and recognition as a Presidential Art Fellowship recipient (2003).
Knudsen’s publications explore art criticism, metamodernism, and interdisciplinary dialogue. He has authored works such as The Art of Critique (2018) and co-edited essays on Kantian sublimity and postmodernism. His presentations include talks at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and TRAC Symposia. Knudsen has also served as a panel judge for the Arkansas Council of the Arts (2012). His exhibitions span venues from Montenegro to Shanghai, reflecting a global engagement with contemporary art practices.
In advising and grants, Knudsen has secured significant funding for exhibitions and research. His artistic career includes retrospectives like Decade—A Retrospective (2003) and international shows in locations such as Hong Kong and Serbia. His work bridges theoretical inquiry and practical studio practices, emphasizing critical discourse in contemporary art education.
