Dr Stephen H. Jones is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology & Sociology at Keele University's School of Social Sciences. He holds a PhD in Sociology from Goldsmiths, University of London (2011). Prior roles include positions at the University of Birmingham (as Lecturer and Associate Professor) and research roles at the University of Bristol and Newman University. His research focuses on discrimination, security policy, science communication, governance, and religion in public life. He has led four major international research projects since 2018 with over £4 million in funding, managing interdisciplinary teams and academic networks.
Key research themes include Islamophobia, anti-Muslim prejudice, counter-terrorism strategies, and the role of religious literacy in public policy. His work bridges sociology, criminology, and political science, addressing topics such as British Muslim engagement with liberal state institutions, science communication within religious communities, and elite social group perceptions of Islam. His research has been featured in media outlets like ITV, Sky News, and The Guardian.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on global crime and justice, social exclusion, and state crimes. He is author of over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including the forthcoming monograph Making Sense of Islamophobia and the published Islam and the Liberal State. His recent grants include £137,000 from the Templeton Religion Trust for studying science transmission in British Islamic knowledge systems and a £2.2 million international network on science and belief funded by Templeton.
Professional activities include editorial roles in journals like Public Understanding of Science and collaborations with organizations such as the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust. His work emphasizes bridging academic research with public engagement through media commentary and policy reports.
