Dr Susan Carland is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Monash University's School of Social Sciences, where she serves as Deputy Director of Research, Impact, and Engagement. She also directs the Bachelor of Global Studies program and holds an Advisory Board position with the Freilich Project for the Study of Bigotry.
Dr Carland's research interests focus on the intersection of religion, gender, and discrimination, with particular expertise in Islamophobia, Muslim women's experiences in Australia, feminism within religious contexts, and social cohesion. Her work examines how religious identity intersects with gender discrimination, media representation of Muslim communities, and strategies for countering prejudice in multicultural societies.
Her scholarly output demonstrates a consistent focus on understanding Muslim women's experiences through multiple lenses - religious, cultural, and political.
