Dr. Isabell Diekmann is a Researcher at Bielefeld University's Faculty of Sociology, specializing in Transnational Relations, Development and Migration Sociology under Prof. Dr. Faist. She is also a co-opted member of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence (IKG) since 2023. Her work focuses on the intersection of migration, religion, and social inequality in contemporary societies.
Dr. Diekmann completed her MA in Sociology at Bielefeld University (2014/15-2017) and her BA in Sociology and Educational Sciences at the University of Osnabrück (2011/12-2014). She earned her doctorate from the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology with her dissertation "Good Muslims, bad Islam? A differentiated view of hostile attitudes toward people and religion."
Her research primarily investigates Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiment, examining how prejudice manifests differently toward religious beliefs versus individuals. She explores (anti)racism and anti-racist social movements, particularly in European contexts, and analyzes social inequality through the lens of migration and religious identity. Her work on reflexive migration research challenges conventional approaches to studying migrant communities, while her studies on prejudice and discrimination provide nuanced understandings of intergroup relations in diverse societies.
Analysis of Dr. Diekmann's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on Islamophobia, anti-Muslim racism, and the social experiences of migrants. Her work employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to differentiate between hostility toward Islam as a religion versus Muslims as individuals. She has conducted significant research on international students' experiences, particularly examining loneliness and social integration. Her scholarship bridges sociology, religious studies, and social psychology to provide nuanced understandings of contemporary prejudice.
