Dr Stephen Green is a Principal Teaching Fellow (equivalent to Associate Professor) at the Dyson School of Design Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College London. He serves as Head of the Innovation Design Engineering programme, a dual-degree initiative with the Royal College of Art, and acts as Academic Tutor within the School. With over 30 years of combined experience in design consultancy and higher education, his leadership spans roles including Director of Teaching and Learning at Brunel University and head of 3D Design programmes at Ravensbourne College.
Green's research centers on design practice innovation, specifically exploring open and collaborative design methodologies, design-led innovation frameworks, and impact assessment models for design value. Funded by major bodies including AHRC, EPSRC, and JISC, his work bridges academic theory with industry application through projects that transform professional design practices and organizational methodologies.
His distinguished career includes multiple industry accolades:
- British Design Award (1993) for groundbreaking computer products
- Designers and Art Directors Silver Award (1998) for innovative suitcase designs
- Business Week International Design Excellence Award (2002) for public conveniences
- Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts
As programme head, Green mentors students through the Innovation Design Engineering and Global Innovation Design programmes while maintaining deep industry connections. His Co-Innovate initiative at Brunel University established multi-million pound European Regional Development Fund partnerships linking London businesses with academic resources. Current collaborations include the Centre for Translational Nutrition and Food Research and the British Industrial Design Association, where he serves on the Board.
Green's work consistently integrates academic rigour with real-world application, evidenced by his consultancy leadership at Fitch (WPP Group) for clients including TfL, Diageo, and Jaguar Land Rover, alongside historic collaborations with BBC, Nokia, Mitsubishi, and Sony on industry-academic projects.
