Stephen Fried

Stephen Fried is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University, with courtesy appointments in Biophysics and Biology. His research integrates biophysics, chemical biology, and mass spectrometry to study proteome-wide protein folding phenomena.

His lab develops crosslinking mass spectrometry and limited proteolysis methods to investigate protein misfolding, chaperone interactions, and biomolecular condensate formation. Research emphasizes connections between protein biophysics and cellular processes including stress response and aging.

Recent publications examine universal misfolding intermediates, the structural resilience of phase-separated proteins, and chaperone dependencies during protein biogenesis. Fried has received the NIH Director's New Innovator Award for methodological innovations in structural proteomics.
