Stephen Ekwaro-Osire is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies at Texas Tech University's Whitacre College of Engineering. A licensed Professional Engineer in Texas and holder of honorary professorships at four international universities, he brings over twelve years of educational leadership experience including interim department chair and associate dean roles.
His academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Texas Tech University (1993)
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Texas Tech University (1989)
- Dipl.-Ing. in Mechanical Engineering, F.H. Osnabrück, Germany (1985)
Research centers on four interconnected domains:
- Uncertainty Quantification: Developing probabilistic frameworks for engineering systems under incomplete information
- Structural Health Monitoring: Creating diagnostic/prognostic algorithms for infrastructure integrity assessment
- Engineering Design Methodology: Advancing product development through systematic innovation processes
- Orthopedic Biomechanics: Applying mechanical principles to musculoskeletal system analysis
Prestigious recognitions include:
- ASME Fellow for contributions to safety engineering and risk analysis
- Society of Design and Process Science Fellow
- Fulbright Scholar distinction
As primary advisor, he has guided 21 PhD and 31 MS graduates while currently mentoring 2 PhD candidates. His committee service spans 93 PhD and 60 MS students, plus 8 postdoctoral researchers and 251 undergraduates. Research funding totals $8.1 million from federal, state, international, and industrial sources including NSF and DOE grants.
The Product Design & Development Laboratory under his direction pioneers risk-aware engineering solutions through cross-disciplinary teams specializing in AI-driven uncertainty modeling and digital twin implementation for wind energy and biomedical applications.
