Professor Stephen Cushion is a Professor at Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture, serving as Director of Research and Impact and leading the school's REF submission. He holds a Senior Fellow (Advanced HE) status and is part of the Senior Management Team (SMT) and Staffing Committee. With a BA (E England), PhD, and MA from Cardiff University, his expertise spans journalism studies, political communication, and media impartiality.
His research focuses on alternative media, election reporting, and public service media, having secured nearly £3 million in grants. Notable projects include an AHRC-funded study on news impartiality (2025), ESRC research on alternative online political media (2019–2023), and BBC Trust Impartiality Reviews. He has authored/co-authored over 100 publications, including books like Beyond the Mainstream Media (2024) and The Democratic Value of News (2012).
Professor Cushion has supervised numerous PhD and MA students, examining topics such as election coverage, media hacking scandals, and satire in journalism. He actively engages with academic conferences, co-organizing major events like the Future of Journalism conferences.
