Stephen Cox is a Professor of English Literature and Distinguished Professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), affiliated with the School of Arts and Humanities. He serves as Director of the Humanities Program and is a Faculty Fellow at Revelle College. Cox holds a Ph.D. from UCLA and has been recognized with multiple teaching awards, including the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award (2000) and the Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award (1991).
His research spans eighteenth-century and romantic literature, cultural history of individualism, history of Christianity, literature of the New Testament, and libertarianism. Notable works include The Titanic Story (1999), The Big House: Image and Reality of the American Prison (2009), and American Christianity: The Continuing Revolution (2014). He has also authored studies on Ayn Rand and Isabel Paterson, contributing to libertarian thought and literary theory.
Cox has held significant university roles, including Chair of the Academic Senate and the Committee on Educational Policy at UCSD and the University of California. He edits Liberty and The Journal of Ayn Rand Studies. His work bridges literature, philosophy, and cultural history, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
