Jeffrey Cox is a Distinguished Professor of English & Humanities at the University of Colorado. His expertise spans British Literature, Cultural Studies, Romanticism, and Cultural Theory. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia (1981) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University (1975). Cox’s research focuses on Romantic-era literature, including studies of Wordsworth, Byron, and Shelley, with an emphasis on tragic drama, periodical essays, and the intersections of literature with cultural, political, and historical contexts. His recent work interrogates themes like the 'Satanic School' of poetry, adaptations of Shelley’s The Cenci, and the cultural resonance of Romanticism in post-Waterloo Britain.
Cox’s scholarly contributions include analyses of literary historiography, gender studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to textuality. His publications often bridge literary criticism with broader cultural and philosophical debates, such as the role of tragedy in Romanticism, the evolution of poetic identity, and the cultural politics of representation. He has also engaged with colonial and postcolonial studies, examining missionary narratives and the interplay between religion and empire.
His academic output includes monographs, edited volumes, and numerous articles, many focusing on the cockney school of poets, theatrical history, and the legacy of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British literature. Cox has been a key figure in shaping contemporary Romantic studies through his critical interventions and editorial work.
