Dr. Stephen Connolly is a Lecturer in Autism and Education at the Sheffield Institute of Education, part of the College of Social Sciences and Arts at Sheffield Hallam University. As an autistic academic, his work focuses on inclusion, emancipatory research methods, and autistic representation in Higher Education (HE). He leads the MA Autism Spectrum program and contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate courses on autism, education, and psychology.
His PhD research examines inclusion strategies for autistic students in HE, informed by the 'Actually Autistic' movement. He collaborates with South Yorkshire and Humberside Police on training programs addressing sensory challenges and specialist interviewing techniques. Key affiliations include the Sheffield Hallam Autism Research Partnership and the Equality and Social Justice Research Group.
Research interests emphasize participatory methodologies, ethics in autism studies, and dismantling ableism in academic settings. He has organized ESRC-funded public engagement events like 'My Autism Soapbox' and consults for media outlets including BBC Radio Sheffield.
