Stephen Campbell

Professor Stephen Campbell is Professor of Primary Care Research at the University of Manchester with over £23 million in research funding. He established and directed the NIHR Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre (2012-2021) and holds an honorary professorship at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in South Africa.

His research focuses on quality and safety in ambulatory care, particularly developing quality indicators, accreditation systems, and improvement strategies. Recent work emphasizes antimicrobial stewardship and primary care quality measurement in low-resource settings, with active collaborations across Africa. Campbell pioneered the European Practice Assessment accreditation framework recognized by the European Health Forum Gastein.

With over 290 publications including articles in NEJM and BMJ, he has influenced national policy through development of the UK's Quality and Outcomes Framework indicators. He leads research on prison healthcare safety and opioid prescribing safety, while maintaining a focus on patient and public involvement in research design.
