Stephen Buono is a Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Social Sciences Division at the University of Chicago and a Society of Fellows Harper & Schmidt Fellow. His work bridges modern U.S. and international history with the history of science and technology, focusing on spaceflight and space politics. He is author of The Province of All Mankind (Cornell UP, 2025), which examines outer space as a domain of U.S. foreign policy and international law. His current projects include a NASA-commissioned study on Cold War lunar governance. Previously, he held research positions at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute and Harvard University’s Belfer Center.
His research explores intersections between space exploration, diplomacy, and technology. Recent publications address the Outer Space Treaty’s historical context, space security frameworks, and Cold War-era space policy debates. Buono’s work underscores the geopolitical dimensions of space exploration and the evolving legal architectures governing extraterrestrial activity.
He holds affiliations with the Department of History and the Society of Fellows, contributing to interdisciplinary research initiatives on technology, governance, and global history. His teaching focuses on 20th-century U.S. foreign relations and the history of science.
