H.R. McMaster is a Lecturer in Management at Stanford Graduate School of Business and Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. A retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General, he served as National Security Advisor under President Trump (2017-2018) and held senior military roles including command of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Iraq. His academic work focuses on Political Economy, International Security, and Military History. Current affiliations include the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and Arizona State University as Distinguished Fellow.
Education: PhD in Military History (UNC Chapel Hill, 1996), BS from U.S. Military Academy (1984). Research explores strategic leadership, military innovation, and historical analysis of U.S. foreign policy failures. Key publications include Dereliction of Duty (Vietnam War critique) and At War With Ourselves (White House memoir). Hosts the Battlegrounds podcast, interviewing global leaders on security challenges.
