H.R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute. He serves as a lecturer at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. A retired lieutenant general with 34 years of service in the US Army, McMaster concluded his military career in June 2018 after serving as the twenty-fifth Assistant to the US President for National Security Affairs.
McMaster's research focuses on military history, national security, and US foreign policy. His expertise spans strategic studies, counterinsurgency, international relations, and geopolitical analysis.
