Stephen Bullivant is Professor of Theology and the Sociology of Religion at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, where he serves as Director of the Benedict XVI Centre for Religion and Society. He holds dual doctorates in Theology (Oxford) and Sociology (Warwick) and has held visiting positions at Oxford, University College London, and Manchester. His research examines religious trends, nonreligion, atheism, and Catholic social history.
Research interests span:
- Religious disaffiliation in Britain/Ireland
- Sociology of atheism and secularism
- Catholic theological anthropology
- Quantitative methods in religious studies
- Intergenerational faith transmission
Articles predominantly focus on secularization dynamics, Catholic theology, and methodological innovations in studying nonreligion. Research has been funded by the AHRC, Templeton Foundation, and British Academy.
Awards include the APA's William Bier Award and multiple competitive research grants. He leads projects on global unbelief patterns and Catholic evangelization.
Current projects involve quantitative analysis of religious trends and editorial work for the Cambridge History of Atheism.
