معرفی
Stephen Boyd is a full Professor within the Maritime Engineering group at the University of Southampton's School of Engineering. His research focuses on maritime composites, experimental and numerical mechanics, and non-contact full-field techniques for structural validation, with applications in sailing yacht performance prediction and hydrofoil modeling.
- Education: BEng (Marine Technology, Newcastle University), MSc (Marine Engineering, Glasgow University), PhD (Hybrid-composite-metal joints, University of Southampton)
His work spans structural testing at various scales, from adhesive joint stress concentrations to full-structure observations, and velocities from quasi-static to high-impact scenarios. He leads the Testing and Structures Research Laboratory (TSRL), a cross-school facility for composite manufacturing and structural imaging.
Stephen's funded projects include EPSRC collaborations with institutions like Luxfer Gas Cylinders Ltd, University of Southampton, and European Union initiatives. His teaching includes Ship Science undergraduate and Maritime Engineering Science postgraduate courses.
- Scientific Awards: Royal Institution of Naval Architects Wakeham Prize (2009), British Society for Strain Measurement’s Young Stress Analyst (2004), Vice Chancellor’s teaching award (2008), Featured Article in Engineering Structures (2025), Best Student Paper Award (2023).
He has supervised PhD students like Darren Roderick and contributed to maritime engineering innovation through consultancy roles with organizations like X-Yachts and the Materials Knowledge Transfer Network.
