Stephen Boyd Davis is a Professor at the Royal College of Art (RCA), leading research activities in the School of Design. His work focuses on visual representation, historical time visualization, and spatial media. He has pioneered digital media integration in art and design education since the 1980s. He co-founded one of the first interactive media Master’s programs and was Head of the Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts (2005–2011). His research explores the history of design research, notably the 1960s Department of Design Research under Bruce Archer.
Education: BA (Hons) in Printed and Woven Textiles from Camberwell School of Art, PGDip in Woven Textiles from Leeds University, and a PhD from Middlesex University (focused on spatiality in depiction).
Key roles include serving on the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) panel and reviewing for multiple research councils. Awards include the Paul Mellon Centre Curatorial Award (2011) and EPSRC funding. Collaborations span institutions like BBC, BT, and System Simulation Ltd. His experimental projects include the 'Heartlands' game and locative media works like 'Scratch.'
Research themes: Chronographics, spatialized media, design history, and digital dissertation practices. Current students include Sam Cottrell (AHRC-funded) and Olivia Vane (Wellcome Library collaboration).
