Prof. Stephen Bates is a Professor at the TUM School of Engineering and Design, specializing in urban development and housing. His research explores contemporary issues in European urbanism through spatial and non-linear design methodologies. He founded Sergison Bates in 1996, earning international acclaim with awards like the Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal (2006). Bates holds a 1989 degree from the Royal College of Art, London, and has taught at institutions including the Architectural Association, ETH Zurich, and EPFL Lausanne.
His work emphasizes challenging conventional urban design approaches while engaging with historical contexts. Key projects include the award-winning Courtyard Housing in London and the De Korenbloem care campus in Belgium. He frequently serves on international architectural juries, including the Sterling Prize and Permis FAD competitions.
Recent publications include edited volumes on urbanity, modernist legacies, and interdisciplinary design thinking. His research bridges theory and practice, addressing complex urban challenges through innovative spatial strategies.
