Marco Bakker is an Associate Professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), affiliated with the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering. He holds positions in the Department of Architecture and the Laboratory for Spatial Manufacturing (MANSLAB-CO). Additionally, he is part of the SAR-ENS unit within the ENAC-SAR division. Born in the Netherlands, Bakker studied architecture at TU Delft and EPF Lausanne. His career includes teaching at the Joint Master program in Bern, Geneva, and Fribourg from 2003–2009, and co-founding the architectural firm 'BABL' in 1992 with Alexandre Blanc.
His research focuses on architecture, urban design, and spatial manufacturing, emphasizing projects like housing densification and adaptive reuse of historic buildings. Notable achievements include winning first prizes for the L’Escale Givisiez housing project (2015) and the ECA Pully urban development scheme (2019). Bakker leads the MANSLAB-CO laboratory, exploring innovative architectural solutions and urban planning strategies.
